If there is no need for me, I leave. Years ago I made a horrible wreck with two or three fatalities, and only two live patients. I arrived onscene with another unit at the same time. I waded through the dead folks, and loaded the two live ones on my rig and smoked it on outta there. I dropped off, did paperwork for two patients, and cleared up sometime later. I heard that the other unit was still on scene, so I went back to check on them. "Hey, you guys alright?" "Yep." "Geez man, hasn't the coroner been here?" "Yeah, he was here a while ago." "Oh, why are you still here?" "We're on this run." There was nothing but a tow truck onscene trying to drag a van out of a ditch. I drove back to the station, drank a glass of kool-aid, had a snack, and played video games for an hour before they cleared up and came back. Dead bodies are dead bodies. I've got stuff to do. WTF? I guess they don't love you, baby. The cops show up and stick around for the same reason that EMS does, when a helicopter is called. It is a social event and nobody would be crass enough to criticize this, because the larger the audience, the more important it is. It's like going to a popular nightclub. Pointing out that a tib/fib fracture is not remotely a reason to fly someone - especially 20 minutes drive from several trauma centers - is considered bad form. OTOH, upgrading a suicide to a murder conspiracy - You da man! They didn’t at least buy you a lollipop. I guess they don’t love you, baby.
