I am a paramedic who works for an organ procurement organization in the wilds of Kentucky. I am also a husband and a father. Occasionally I fancy myself to be a writer, hence the blog. You are welcome to witness this train wreck but the experience can be disorienting. Don't go swimming for at least thirty minutes.

Stereotyping... easy to do... way, way unfair... unfortunate... a shame that society has an influence on our child rearing because it becomes difficult to teach them... Kudos Buck... Keep them coming...

Yep, this racism thing probably bothers me more than anything else in my career. Expect more posts about it. I grew up in Texas where there were many Mexican immagrants. The racism towards them just confused me. For instance, it was common to put the two words 'lazy' and 'Mexican' together. I have never understood this. I don't think I have ever seen a lazy Mexican. All I have seen is people who come here work 14-16 hours a day, 7 days a week and send all their money home to their family. How is that lazy?

Don't get me started on how many calls we can run back to back on trashy white people, then we make one run on a person of color who is a bit on the shady side and I have to endure racial slurs for 45 minutes. Mmmmmm, that might be my next post.

As far as a book deal. Yeah. Sure. Why not? problem is that no one is offering. I have been writing stories like this for years. Sent a few in to magazines. All rejected. Got a pile of people coming to this blog though. Oh well. That's not really my goal. I'm just mentally flossing in my downtime. You may read the results.

Some of my best memories wore when I was stationed out of thr South Central Los Angeles/Compton area. I enjoyed working in the under served communities because I was needed there, and felt I could really help. Not just for the traumas, but for health care and health education in general. The ""bad parts of town"" are unjustly stereotyped. In reality 95% of the people there are good folk how care about there families and there neighborhood and are just trying to get by. It's the other 5% (gang bangers, drug dealers/addicts, system abusers) that screw it up for the rest of them. This is also the 5% we most come in contact with. Be well Buck.

It seems to me that the biggest culprit(s) working against EMS is the Media. Shows like "Trauma" and "third watch" seem to get in the way of any REAL EMS P.R. / publicity. Its kinda like CSI. If every police force had that sort of operation, then crime would be almost non exisitant. Some people do think that way and cannot understand why the police force is human afterall. Its the same in our field. People think we can & do EVERYTHING including CT scans, X-rays and even surgery in our rigs because of TV. As always, an awesome post and I am serious when I say again you should be thinking book deal (I.e. Peter Canning)with these short stories. Stay safe in the hollar.
